What Emmitt Smith Taught Me About Showing Up Every Day

September 15, 2022 · Greg Brainerd

Greg Brainerd with NFL Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith and signed footballs

I got to meet Emmitt Smith, the all-time leading rusher in NFL history, and walk away with a signed football and something more useful: a reminder about how greatness actually gets built.

Emmitt wasn’t the biggest running back. He wasn’t the fastest. Scouts said so out loud. What he was, year after year, was available and consistent. He showed up, did the unglamorous work, protected the ball, and kept moving the chains. Three Super Bowls and a Hall of Fame career later, the record belongs to the guy who just kept showing up.

Consistency beats flash

In IT, the flashy stuff gets the attention: the big migration, the dramatic recovery after an outage. But the businesses we protect don’t actually want drama. They want the boring kind of reliability: the backup that ran last night, the patch that got installed, the phishing email that got blocked before anyone saw it.

That’s the work nobody throws a parade for. It’s also the work that decides whether your business has a bad afternoon or a catastrophic week. Like Emmitt grinding out four yards a carry, the value is in doing the fundamentals right, every single day, without being asked.

How we apply it for you

  • Proactive maintenance so problems get prevented, not just fixed
  • Backups that are tested, not just assumed
  • A real person who answers when you call, consistently, not occasionally

We’d rather be the team you forget about because everything just works than the heroes who show up after disaster. If that’s the kind of IT you want behind your business, see our managed IT services, or call us in Houston at 281-367-8253. More about our team is on our about page.
