Lock Your Computer Every Time You Walk Away (Win + L)

May 31, 2026 · Greg Brainerd

Computer code on a screen

You step away from your desk for just a minute — grab some coffee, chat with a coworker, run to the restroom. Your computer sits there, unlocked, with your email open, your files accessible, and maybe even your banking logged in.

In that one minute, anyone walking by could read sensitive emails, send messages as you, copy files to a USB drive, or install something malicious. It happens more often than you’d think — and not just from outside threats. Disgruntled employees, curious visitors, even well-meaning coworkers can cause serious problems.

The fix takes literally one second

Press the Windows key + L at the same time. That’s it. Your screen locks instantly, and nobody gets in without your password.

Make it a habit. Every single time you stand up — even if you’re just turning around to talk to someone — Win + L. It should become muscle memory, like locking your car when you walk away.

Some companies even make this a policy: leave your computer unlocked and unattended, and a friendly prank email gets sent from your account. Learn the easy way, not the embarrassing way.
