John Maxwell: Everything Rises and Falls on Leadership

Greg Brainerd with leadership author and speaker John Maxwell

If you’ve ever read a book on leadership, there’s a good chance it was written by John Maxwell. He’s sold more than 35 million books, and he’s spent decades teaching one core idea: everything rises and falls on leadership. Both my wife Tracy and I have learned from him, so getting to meet him was a real privilege.

Maxwell’s most famous line is that leadership is influence: nothing more, nothing less. Not your title. Not the size of your office. Influence: whether people choose to follow you when they don’t have to.

Why a leadership lesson belongs on an IT company’s blog

Because the quality of your IT has almost nothing to do with the brand of firewall we install, and almost everything to do with the people standing behind it. A great technician who’s poorly led will burn out and cut corners. A well-led team takes ownership, communicates, and treats your business like it matters.

Maxwell’s teaching is a big reason we built Braintek around values like “own it to done” and “people first.” We try to lead our team the way we’d want them to treat you, with honesty, follow-through, and genuine care. When that’s right on the inside, you feel it on the outside.

The lesson for your business too

  • Your team reflects your leadership. If technology frustration is hurting morale, that’s a leadership problem worth solving.
  • Influence is earned by example. We don’t ask our people, or yours, to do anything we wouldn’t.
  • Grow your people and they’ll grow your business. The right tools should make your team more capable, not just busier.
