Take a Perfect Screenshot in Windows (Win + Shift + S)

How to use it
Press Windows key + Shift + S all at the same time. Your screen dims slightly, and you can drag to select exactly the area you want to capture. It copies instantly to your clipboard, ready to paste into an email, a document, or a chat.
Need the whole screen? After pressing the shortcut, click the full-screen icon at the top. Want just one window? There’s an option for that too.
The screenshot also saves to a notification in the corner — click it to mark it up with arrows, highlights, or text before sharing.

Where do my screenshots go?
Every capture lands on your clipboard immediately, ready to paste. On Windows 11, the Snipping Tool can also save a copy of every screenshot automatically to your Pictures → Screenshots folder, so you can find one from last week without having thought to save it. Check the Snipping Tool’s settings to make sure automatic saving is turned on.
Can I capture a menu that closes when I press keys?
Yes. Open the Snipping Tool app itself and use the delay option, which waits a few seconds before capturing. That gives you time to open the menu, tooltip, or dropdown you’re trying to grab. It’s the trick for screenshotting things that vanish the instant you click elsewhere.
Can it record video too?
On Windows 11 it can. Open the Snipping Tool app and switch from the camera icon to the video icon to record a portion of your screen. That’s perfect for showing IT support exactly what happens when an error appears, instead of trying to describe it in an email. A thirty second recording often saves a thirty minute back and forth.
