Take a Perfect Screenshot in Windows (Win + Shift + S)

May 6, 2026 · Greg Brainerd

Using a tablet at work

Someone asks you to send them what’s on your screen. Maybe it’s an error message, a chart from a report, or something you’re looking at online. So you take out your phone, snap a blurry photo of your monitor, and text it over. We’ve all done it — but there’s a much better way.

Windows has a built-in screenshot tool that’s fast, clean, and incredibly useful.

How to use it

Press Windows key + Shift + S all at the same time. Your screen dims slightly, and you can drag to select exactly the area you want to capture. It copies instantly to your clipboard, ready to paste into an email, a document, or a chat.

Need the whole screen? After pressing the shortcut, click the full-screen icon at the top. Want just one window? There’s an option for that too.

The screenshot also saves to a notification in the corner — click it to mark it up with arrows, highlights, or text before sharing.

This is perfect for documenting problems for IT support, saving receipts and confirmations, sharing something with a coworker, or keeping a record of information before it disappears. Once you memorize Win + Shift + S, you’ll use it every day — no more blurry phone photos of your screen.
